Flood Prevention - St. Ives (Cornwall)
In the picturesque fishing town of St. Ives, the local Council were naturally concerned about flooding to their town, especially due to the steep roads that approach the town centre. The memories of the devastating floods in nearby Boscastle (2004) were a paramount driver to take action before disaster struck.

The Council needed a highly robust system - it needed to withstand constant trafficking and have the ability to cope with large quantities of water from the inclined roads. The existing drainage on the access roads to St. Ives would be unable to cope with extreme storm events, and so a high-capacity channel system was thought to be the ideal solution.
Working with Carillion Construction, JDP supplied over 100 metres of Hauraton's FaserFix Super 500 channels in various places to provide the most effective flood prevention, and keep St. Ives "safe and dry".
FaserFix Super 500 channels are made from fibre-reinforced concrete, providing an extrememly robust and rugged channel with a large drainage capacity and heavy duty cast iron covers. These covers are designed for heavy load applications (E600kN).
The project was supported by Andy Beirne and Steve Wiseman from Hauraton, and Jim Brown from JDP, who gave theoretical and practical advice during the design phase and installation. The local Building Control department, Council, planners and the building contractor were all full of praise for the flexible service throughout the project - another job well done...
