At JDP (John Davidson Pipes), a leading provider of drainage solutions, we're proud to have offered a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete drainage pipes for a housing development committed to sustainable living.
Overview

Location: Yelland, North Devon
Customer: MJL Contractors Ltd.
Project: Barnstaple – New Housing Development
The Challenge
MJL Contractors Ltd. required a reliable drainage solution for a new housing development in North Devon on behalf of their client, Wain Homes (South West) Ltd.
JDP's Solution
JDP partnered with MJL Contractors to supply our flagship ULTRA3 lightweight, sustainable PVC-U underground drainage system as an alternative to traditional concrete pipes.
The Result
The efficient installation of ULTRA-3 sewer pipe ensured the project remained on schedule and reduced installation time.
About the Project
MJL Contractors Ltd are a Groundworks and Civil Engineering contractor based in Cornwall. They are currently working on an exciting new Wain Homes development set in the charming North Devon village of Yelland, delivering thoughtfully designed, energy-efficient homes.
Wain Homes are committed to building homes that embrace sustainable living, which underlines MJL’s decision to work with JDP.
How were JDP Involved?
MJL made an enquiry with JDP to price our ULTRA-3 pipe system as an alternative solution to concrete. MJL had previously used Ultra Rib and concrete pipes throughout all of their sites, but the sustainability-focused USP’s of ULTRA-3 caught their attention.
ULTRA-3 is our sustainable solution to underground drainage. Manufactured from virgin PVC-U material on the outer and inner surfaces (for optimal flow performance) but with an inner core engineered from at least 40% carefully selected recycled PVC. This makes for a uniquely ‘green’ product that is relatively light compared to traditional materials and, therefore, safer to handle on-site, requiring less hazardous and expensive mechanical handling.
Our External Key Account Manager, Neal Johnson, worked closely with MJL to explain the benefits of our system and identify areas where savings in time and money could be made by choosing it for their project. All necessary specification and data sheets were provided, and approval for the order was granted.
Our key account internal sales team and JDP’s hub branch then worked together to ensure seamless product delivery of 231 meters of 400mm diameter ULTRA-3 pipe directly to the site, all on one vehicle. Had concrete pipe been supplied, it would have required three trucks to complete an order of this size. This was not only more convenient for the site, but it also minimised the carbon footprint of the delivery.
What was the Result?

A key element of this collaboration was our recommendation to replace traditional concrete drainage with our innovative ULTRA-3 plastic drainage system. This switch offered several advantages:
- Sustainability - ULTRA-3 is a lightweight and eco-friendly alternative to concrete, reducing the project’s environmental footprint.
- Efficiency - The lighter weight of ULTRA-3 facilitated a faster installation process by 35%.
- Safety - The lighter weight of ULTRA-3 also reduced manual handling risks for the construction team.
Using our ULTRA-3 pipes enabled the team on site to work more efficiently and faster than expected, managing to lay 57 metres (19 lengths) in one day. Typically, when working with concrete pipes, they would have expected to lay only 25 metres in one day.
Building Strong Partnerships
Neal Johnson, Key Account Manager, visited the site one week after delivery and said:
The lads were very pleased with the quality of the product, the ease of installation and the way the pipe feels with it being lightweight and smooth.
When asked for feedback after the ULTRA-3 system had been installed, Dave Ozels, the Site Manager for the Yelland project, said:
The whole process was made a lot easier by using these pipes, saving time and money, a lot less to go wrong.
He also expressed his hope that they could use ULTRA-3 again on other projects, given how impressed the “guys on the ground” were with the products.
